Centering prayer

‘Prayer is not a request for God’s favours… Genuine prayer is based on recognising the origin of all that exists and opening ourselves to it.’
- Cynthia Bourgeault

‘Come Closer’

Find a quiet space... get comfortable... take some deep breaths... Close your eyes...

What’s taking up space in your mind? Just notice it. Don’t judge it or try to solve it... just let it be...

Choose a sacred word that feels right to you today. Your sacred word might be a descriptor of God, such as ‘Shelter’ or ‘Shepherd.’ It might be a word that describes your relationship to God such as ‘held’ or ‘beloved.’

Let that word sit in your mind. Repeat the word. Allow time to stretch between each time you say it. As your mind wanders (it will), notice where it wanders to. Be an observer of your own inner life. Use the sacred word to bring you back to the present moment—to right now with God.

This practice can take as much or as little time as you need... don’t judge your experience or worry about whether it ‘worked’. That’s not the point. Just be in the moment. Notice what you notice. Let your sacred word represent God drawing you closer to Him.

God already knows the burdens you carry and offers you His rest in this very moment as you come closer...
